Curriculum – Nursery Program

All our objectives for our Nursery program curriculum are considered “introductions”.

We recognize that three and four year olds are developing quickly and uniquely in many ways. Therefore, while “beginning academic” skills are introduced, we accept where the individual child is.

Developmental and social skills are recognized as most important. We desire to encourage imagination, creativity and good self-esteem, which will help foster the love of learning.

Music and movement are part of our daily curriculum. We sing silly songs and Christian songs during Circle and Bible Time. Daily music and movement are important to the development of gross motor skills.

READING READINESS OBJECTIVES

*Introduce recognition of first name

*Introduction of alphabet –  Capital letters

*Introduction of primary colors

*Introduction of Nursey Rhymes

*Utilize and refine listening skills

We introduce one letter per week, focusing on capital letters. During the week we read stories highlighting vocabulary or characters beginning with the letter of the week. We reinforce the letters with daily crafts. The children choose colors to make their craft, promoting color recognition and decision-making skills.

To achieve our goal of recognizing a nursery rhyme we choose to concentrate on one Nursery Rhyme each month. Throughout that month we recite and/or sing that Nursery Rhyme. Our crafts support the recognition of the Nursery Rhyme during the month.

MATH READINESS OBJECTIVES

*Introduction of numbers 1 – 10

*Introduction of basic shapes

*Introduction of rote counting 1 – 20

Many of our math skills are introduced during our “Circle Time”. We utilize the calendar to introduce many of the skills listed in our objectives. The children also practice rote counting and number recognition by counting classmates and using flannel board to place pieces on it, representing each child present that day. We use games, stories and songs to reinforce skills. In addition, we use crafts to promote rote counting, shape identification and number recognition.
